Grants For Women in Need – Go to College and Get a Good Job Using Other People’s Money

Women now have the freedom to work almost anywhere they want. Despite this equality being enshrined in law, there is still a covert level of gender discrimination in the workplace. There are still few women CEOs, few women Professors and few women politicians. This inability of women to get good jobs was not a big problem in the past because there were strong family and community ties to help women in need when something happened to their husbands. But this is not the case today. Both men and women have to stand on their own – even single mothers with children to feed.

Fortunately, higher education has greatly leveled the playing field. Despite gender discrimination, a woman with a college education can get a good job. Of course, with college tuition fees being so expensive, the question now becomes – how is a woman to afford college? Because this problem has been around for quite some time, several parties have stepped up to the plate to provide grants for women in need.

These grants take various forms, but are intended to help a woman (especially single mothers) get her Bachelors degree so that she can get a good job. The grants that are most sought after are scholarships which give away free money. However, competition is fierce and most of these scholarships do not pay the full tuition fee. One further problem is that many of them require full-time study, which is a problem for most single mothers who have to work full-time as well as over-time to feed their children.

Nevertheless, there are still a few of these scholarship providers. One of them is the federal government’s Pell Grant (which can be found on the FAFSA site). It awards up to $5500 to any US citizen studying for his or her first Bachelors degree full-time. Less money will be awarded for part-time study. It also accepts online university courses – many Phoenix University students can afford to enroll only because they receive money from the Pell Grant.

Besides the federal government, there are also private scholarships like those sponsored by the Philanthropic Educational Organization and the Jeannette Rankin Women’s Foundation. The former (PEO) has separate scholarship programs for young women and older women. The Jeannette Rankin Foundation only awards scholarships to women over 35.

As previously mentioned, scholarships are just one way that grant money is dispensed to women in need. A common alternative to scholarships is student loans. The biggest and most famous of these is the federal government’s Stafford program. It subsidizes and guarantees student loans offered by banks and credit unions, reducing the commercial interest rate by nearly half (from about 12% or 13% down to 6.8%). There is another lesser known alternative – the Perkins loan program. It is also sponsored by the government, but the loans are offered by the college. The details are roughly the same as that for the Stafford loan. Like the Pell Grant, both of these programs are available on the FAFSA site. The previously introduced PEO also offers its own student loan at an interest rate of 3% to 4%.

Many women are still stuck working menial jobs because they did not go to college. While some of them lack the determination to improve themselves, many are just ignorant of the free study grants for women in need. If they take up these scholarships and loans, they will be able to get their Bachelors degrees and find better jobs without having to spend their own money.

Free Small Business Grant Money

Between the government and private foundations, there is over $500 billion in small business grant money available every year, and a big part of these funds go unclaimed. This is cash that you can obtain to help finance your start up costs or expand your current business, and because small business grant funds are not loans, you will never have to pay this money back. Even if your business fails.

The government provides small business grant money as a way to produce more tax income. The more successful your business is, the more jobs it creates, the more people spend on your product or service, and the more money your business will spend. Those are all good things for the economy and things that will bring in tax income for years to come. For that reason alone, small business grants are a good investment for the government if you can show a business plan that interests them.

Because there are a number of government agencies and private grant programs that will provide qualified applicants with small business grant money, the terms of each individual program slightly differ. Some will allow you to spend the cash you receive to purchase real estate, office furniture, or new computer equipment. Others may have stricter guidelines and only to be used to hire employees, provide professional development, or do business cross borders.

Whatever the case, there are a number of government and privately sponsored grant programs for new and existing small business owners. These funds can help those with an entrepreneurial mind take their dream and make it a reality, and the greatest benefit is that you never have to pay grant money back.

Facts About Government Grants For Women-Owned Small Business

A persuasive salesman would tell you that they could sell you a extraordinary list of funders who gives “free money” to begin a business. I’m telling you, don’t believe them. Despite the fact that there are some programs which helps women who wishes to put up a business for themselves. These loans are usually for education, loans for development or tax credits rather than grants. Funders of grants don’t offer money for start-up profit business. The government would not do it; even the IRS won’t permit private foundations to do it. So could you have a grant?

History
Local, state and federal government encourage all women to start up and run their own businesses. One way of doing this that also has been giving extra “points” to grant applicants from organizations or businesses that are led or owned by women. Businesses that are owned by women, people with disabilities and minorities and are also called HUBs (historically underutilized businesses) since they have received a disproportionately small share of grants, government business or low-cost loans in the past. There is no government agency that gives grants directly to a person planning to start-up a business no matter who owns them. So how could a woman find a government grant for her business?

Funders
Local, state and federal government give grants charities, to schools and organizations to do things that a government wants. These include programs in energy, health care, science, cultural and historical preservation, education, social services, mental health, research, the arts and transportation. Twenty-six government agencies that give grants distribute those funds to meet the local, state, international and national community needs. All of these agencies release requests for proposals (RFPs) for the duration of each year and get grant applications. So do councils of governments and regional boards, states, cities and countries. Programs hence funded provide supplies, services, construction, equipment and other things a community need to develop the quality of life for their citizens.

Search Tools
On the Internet, you could find federal clearinghouses for grant info. Some releases requests for proposal (RFPs) since every agency reports a new funded program. RFPs are info packets which tell you how to apply for the grant and what type of grant the agency is going to fund. It also includes an application packet that could be downloaded with all its necessary support tools.

Some websites also offers a place to sign up for free e-mail alerts. You could filter the alerts to have only RFPs in your area of interest. States have the same grant alert websites that you must keep up with. It usually takes months and even years for a RFP to be released for which you are qualified.

Countries, cities, and government regional councils sometimes makes development funds which targets HUBs (historically underutilized businesses) such as business owned by women. These are usually in high crime, high poverty or areas with low resource that needs infrastructure development. Try to spend some of your time talking to local officials so that you will find out more about these opportunities.

You could as well check the funding library of your area. These could be found at public libraries or regional non-profit management centers. Funding libraries gives access to hardcopy and online grant announcements, information about funders and foundations. They also have friendly staffs to assist and help you find what you are looking for.

Eligibility
Even if you find a grant that meets your needs, you would still have to meet the requirements of the grant. RFP would specify the intention of the grant. Actually, grants are like contracts, these are not free money. They pay for facilities and activities which provide general public welfare rather than benefit any individual organization or business. If a majority of your charity’s board of directors are women or if your company is owned or run by women, it may make you eligible for extra consideration, but you will still have to meet all the requirements of the grant. The Small Business Administration advises that there are no government grants for vague ideas for some kind of for-profit businesses no matter who owns them.

Business Grants Mean Free Money For Your Venture!

Business grants are becoming increasingly available for people who are looking to establish their own company, whether this be a commercially operated business for profit, or a charitable society, or outreach program. Business grants are more significant and more powerful than simply a cash injection into a company because not only do they open doors and allow for more business opportunities, but they also help to minimize the degree of risk to the entrepreneur. Many newly founded businesses are founded with the input of a loan, and given the significant amount of money required to even have a basic shell of a business operative, banks and financial lenders will want some collateral to secure the loan.

The most valuable asset that the entrepreneurs will have in their ownership will typically be their home, and whilst the value of the property will allow them to secure for themselves a higher amount of a loan, this means that in the event of default, i.e. non payment be it for whatever reason then the collateral is forfeited. This means that most small business entrepreneurs are gambling with their homes because there is simply no way to predict if a business will be successful, regardless of the preparation and planning the entrepreneur makes, the chance of failure is always present. This is why business grants are so powerful because they help to offset this crucial risk so often undertaken by many an entrepreneur, meaning that should the business fail, then it is just the business that will fail and nothing more.

Often, entrepreneurs fall into the fallacy of thinking “if my house is at risk if I do not pay, then I will make sure that I pay the loan off”. The terms of the average loan require monthly instalments to be repaid, and whilst the entrepreneur may give these a top priority, this is an expense upon the company and so places a strain on a monthly basis. Loan repayments mean less money for the satisfaction of the debts of the company, less money to buy stock, to train staff etc. The business has to adapt and make do with more limited resources, and given the need for a new business to advertise itself and make it successful in marketing terms every penny counts.

One of the most common reasons for the insolvency and subsequent liquidation of a company is a limited cash flow, i.e. unable to pay debts when they arise. Having to pay monthly instalments is a sure-fire way to limit the cash flow of a business, and so business grants give newly founded companies a fighting chance of survival. The initial period of establishing itself, creating a solid reputation and attracting consumer loyalty is always the most trying time of any company and so anything that can help offset the pressures prevalent during this time is a positive step. Business grants are not easy to acquire however, they are something to be earned rather than awarded, so make sure you develop a solid, professional and articulate business plan so as to ensure the greatest chances of success. Don’t give up, make sure to be persistent in your applications and learn from your mistakes. You patience, diligence and tenacity will eventually pay off, and if you have that sort of drive, you will surely succeed in business!

There’s been a lot of talk lately about the Federal Pell Grant. In fact, there has been a lot of talk about financial aid for students in general, including grants and scholarships. That is ten thousand dollars of tax free money that will never have to be repaid. Surely, that would and could help you with achieving your education goals, and put you in a position to better provide for your family.

So what is the Federal Pell Grant anyway? This grant is strictly given as a need based grant. That means applicants need to be in dire financial straits. That you could not afford to go to college without some sort of financial aid or assistance. Assuming you meet the application criteria, the Pell Grant amount for 2010-2011 is $5,500. Both full and part time students can apply, however the amount given to part time students will be less than the amount given to full time students.

Single moms will be happy to know that they are not restricted to applying to actual college campuses. You can apply for online courses as well, meaning that you can stay home to look after your families. Another thing worth mentioning is that as on January 2010, the Free Application for Federal Student Aid form, or the FAFSA, has been simplified, so filling it out isn’t as difficult as it once was. And in some cases, you may be able to find out an estimate of your grant eligibility instantly. You have until June to apply for this grant, but many officials urge prospective students to apply immediately.
