Optimizing Google Places Part 1 – Starting a Business

If you are lucky enough to be starting a new business and have the foresight to consider your website search engine optimization, here are a couple tips to help you get started on the right foot. Google Places ranking (formerly Google Local Business) is more important than organic search rankings for local businesses. These tips will help you get the first-page top-ten ranking that you need.

Tip 1: Name your business using the keywords that customers would use to search for your services

If your business is named RoachBlaster LLC and you provide pest control services, you will not rank as high in Google Places as a business called Pest Control LLC. Better yet, if you own a pest control business in Grand Rapids, MI, call it Grand Rapids Pest Control LLC.

If your business name uses the terms that people will use to search for your business, you will rank higher than your competition and capture those coveted top positions in Google Places. Don’t know what keywords users would use to locate you? Try using the Google Keyword Tool to find the most search keywords closest to your business.

Tip 2: Open your business as close to the city center as possible

Google Places puts a lot of importance on your business location in relation to the city center. Using the pest control example above, a company with an address within Grand Rapids will rank higher than a company in Wyoming, even though Wyoming is a suburb of Grand Rapids.

In addition, a company located on the outskirts of the city of Grand Rapids will not rank as high as a company with offices located downtown near the city center.

Tip 3: Buy a domain name that contains the keywords that customers would use to search for your services

If you are the owner of RoachBlaster LLC, and you own RoachBlaster.com, you may think you are all set – but you are missing out on a huge chunk of almost free search engine optimization. Sure, customers could find you if they searched for “roachblaster”, but that doesn’t help you if they don’t know your business name, and it won’t help your ranking in Google Places.

Instead, buy grandrapidspestcontrol.com, or grandrapids-pestcontrol.com, or any variation with hyphens to ensure that your keywords are in your domain name. This tells Google Places that your website is about pest control in Grand Rapids, and your website content will confirm this, ultimately leading to a higher search engine rank.

Tip 4: Use a phone number with a local area code

There is still some discussion about whether this matters, but if you have the option to list your local phone number or your toll-free number, opt to list your local phone number and area code as your main number, and then you can add your toll-free number as an additional number.

The entire goal of this process is to prove to Google Places that your business really does exist and is located in the city that you say it is, and anything information that you have to give to Google Places in this effort will help your business rank higher in the long run.

Starting A Business – What Steps Should You Take First – Part 1

When I started my business I looked at many items and hyped up make money now type things and found most were not what they said they were. I finally found the products I wanted to sell and signed up with the company. So now I’m ready to start selling my products right! WRONG. You must do more research.

Q1: What else do you need to research?

A1: What type of ownership are you going to use? There are several types such as sole owner, partnership, scorporation, corporation. You should research them and find which will work best for you. Depending on what type you choose to use determines what state agencies with which you will need to file.

A1: One thing about partnerships you MUST DO is ask yourself will your partner actually DO THE WORK! I tried several partnerships only to find out that my partners talked a good game but when it came to results there was always an excuse as to why something was not done. Needless to say those partnerships are no longer in existence. A good rule of thumb is to ask yourself if they are already making excuses for small things what will happen when a deadline MUST BE MET. No the odds are they will not get better at handling responsibility.

A2: What business name are you going to use? If you are using an assumed name such as jbf enterprises you need to register your assumed name with the state. In Illinois you have to register the name and put an ad in the local newspaper and run it for five days this will cost a few dollars and may vary. If you are using your real name you do not need to do this.

A3: You need to find out about sales tax. If you are doing an online business you may need to charge tax for items sold in your state but not in other states. DO NOT skip this step, if you do not collect tax and you were suppose to be collecting tax, you could LOSE the business you worked so hard to create. You will charge the customers the tax so PAY the government. You may also get a tax exemption on some of the items you buy for the business. If you are making a product, and buy a switch to go into the finished product the switch purchase may be eligible for a tax exemption. Ask your local tax agency they have great information and don’t mind answering your questions. If you have an actual store then you will need to collect sales tax from everybody.

A4: I recommend a separate bank account for your business. Shop around there are different fees for different things such as credit card transactions, low balance, check fees, money transfer service charges and many more. One reason for a separate bank account is it makes tax time a whole lot easier. Another reason is It also makes it harder for you to take money out for personal use because you have to stop and think about it when you have to use a different checkbook. With the business and personal accounts together it is far to easy to say I’ll pay it back later.

A5: Get some good accounting software and put everything in it. This makes tax time much easier. It should have a report manager and this can tell you many things like customer information, inventory and how much your spending on advertising and other controllable expenses. We tend not to look at the whole picture. We see $5 a week as not bad for advertising but at the end of the month we look at $20 dollars a whole different way. We begin to ask if we got our moneys worth. Remember a $1 here a $1 there adds up and a weekly or monthly report can shock you as to how much money you are actually spending.

A5a: The accounting software also helps keep track of tax deductible items. For instance rent of office space ex. I rent and my computer is in my apartment so I can deduct part of the rent. Same can be said for my phone if I use it for the business. My cable internet can be deducted as well as a percent of my utilities. Other items can include gas for the car, oil changes etc… Keep your receipts!

A6: I used an accountant at tax time no not h&r block or some service like that but an actual accountant. Talk to your friends and neighbors and find out if they have someone they use and like. No they’re not that expensive I had my taxes done for about $110 dollars which was cheaper than when I had my personal taxes done the year before.

Starting a Business – You Need a Mentor

Finding the right niche for your online business takes a little “hard work”.

I searched for the right tool that could assist me. And now there are at least over 100,000 sites and articles explaining how.

And as a beginner I know it is difficult with all the information available on the web, we just can’t decide where to start.

A year ago, I would have been in the same shoes as you are in now. But I have learned “one thing” And this “one thing” just gave me the opportunity to focus, learn new skills and confidence to start my business.

And this “one thing” is to find the RIGHT MENTOR.

As for me, I wanted to start an Online Business…and look where I am right now.

A mentor who can teach me the ins and outs of the business that I want to engage in. My advice to you beginners and newcomers start looking for a MENTOR.

We made the mistake of making our first shop, really bright, and cluttered, with too much going on, so that it was very difficult for the shopper to concentrate on our products. The look and feel of your shop should potentially match those people viewing your site. Find colors that complement your shops style, but don’t drive away potential customers. Adding value to your store, such as a newsletter subscription, or blog feed, or even some simple but effective YouTube videos, to increase the reasons people would want to stay on your website.

We use a blog to keep friends and customers connected to the value we offer, along side our products. Many places can build one for you, and some can give you design tools to create one yourself. GoDaddyHosting & Servers or Yahoo! Small Business Yahoo! Yahoo also has online stores you can open, if you plan on getting a seller’s permit, and a business license to sell products from your home.

This ultimately is how companies start out selling, then moving into huge warehouses, and taking over the market. Start small, and move to larger leaps and bounds. The great thing about a third party company is that it can build the revenue and designs for printing and selling your own T-Shirts. In addition, a shop can provide market research, based on which designs sell the most, to help decide which designs to print yourself.

If you’re not a webmaster, you can use a website that offers “website templates” to build a personal website. This creates value and allows the customer the chance to get to know you, and relate to the shop owner.

On some sites you can try to set up affiliate ads with other companies and receive commission when someone buys something from a linked company through your site. Search in the Google search engine for “AdSense”, or “paid per click” advertising. This way, you can generate revenue for each person who comes to your site, and clicks on your ads. Try and not saturate the web page with ads, because we want your viewers to see your products. Make sure to tag your Designs. Tagging your designs is a great way for your products and website to come up higher on the search lists of major search engines.

Once you have got your feet wet and have a good number of designs go ahead and transfer over to producing your own shirts. Once you gain some market insight as to what shirts of yours people are talking about, and which designs are selling, you can start to have your own shirts made. Some ways of producing your shirts are: screen printing, heat transfer, Iron on, Direct Printing, and embroidery. You can buy shirts wholesale inexpensively and get your designs printed fairly cheap as well. Make sure you do the math right to produce the shirts in bulk amounts for less than you would sell them to the public.

Since you’ve got your own shirts, department stores, boutiques, and online stores can start to sell your product. Take a few personally made shirts around town to see if stores would like to sell your shirts. This is where you have to be a salesperson, and believe in your product if you want to get into stores.

Its not a bad idea to give some of your biggest fans some free shirts. You’re going to need a shopping cart on your page. GoDaddy has a wonderful site hosting and shopping cart tools. You are also going to have to be able to take orders and ship to your customers in a reasonable amount of time. I might suggest UPS. or USPS. Whichever you think is cheapest and speediest.

Does having your own website outside of a custom T-Shirt shop increase traffic and sales?

Yes it does. It gives you another platform for your products to be seen. You can submit the site to directories, as a complete entity outside your custom shop. You can use SEO tips and tricks to optimize your website for the highest search engine results. SEO is needed because you can attach keywords, phrases, and words people would search for when they go to sites such as Google, and yahoo, to search for T-Shirts or products.

A good idea would be to go ahead and start and join a social networking site for your t shirt company such as MySpace or Facebook or Twitter, etc. to communicate with your public, and find out which ideas or designs can fly with the masses. You’ll even be able to write blogs, or bulletins to inform your friends when new shirts come out, and even entertain them a little bit. We recommend that you add 100 friends a day on MySpace or so to build your brand recognition and cultivate relationships. You can stay connected to your consumers and use blogs and messages to find out what your market wants on their shirts. They can comment on your photos of products you upload and figure out what is popular, and what is not so popular. You can even network orders through those sites. Free stuff is always a great way to bring value to your site.

If you have some cash, give a way some free products in a contest. Promote the contest as much as possible, to have people come to your site, sign up for a newsletter, or blog, or submit emails about your site to their friends, for a chance to win a free product. This is a great way to increase recognition of your brand, increase SEO, and increase your page rank in Google, all leading to more traffic, more looks at your products, and more sales.

One thing many good websites incorporate to drive their page rank higher, and increase traffic to their site, is Links pages. Creating a links page or link directory, is a way to increase your popularity with the search engines. Contact people about exchanging links. You put their site address or URL on your website. They return the favor. You both get links pointing towards your website, and search engines love when you have more links pointing towards your site. The more links to your site, the more important it is for the search engines. The more important the website is, the higher it will show up in search results. (there is a method to this madness, and Google’s figured it out). If you have a direct link to your website, (ex: a one way link, where some other site, links to your site, and you don’t link to them) it tends to hold more weight with Google and other search engines. If you have more than one website request a link exchange with another website, and ask to place their link, on website #2, which will point towards their website. They get a direct link. Have them put up a link to your website #1, where you want most of the traffic, and you get a direct link to your site. Everybody wins.

A Fast way to increase traffic to your website, is directory submission. Go to Google, Yahoo, or use those search engines to search for more directories where you can submit your website’s URL, in order to get index and recorded in their searches. This way, your site will appear in search results, whenever someone searches for terms in your website.

Another technique is using target market titles, descriptions, content and keywords.

- Put key phrases and words based on what content and products your shop will be selling, right into your title.

- Give the description of your shop a good use of keywords and relative phrases to your content, and products. It’s a good idea to match your descriptions, with the content in your page as much as possible. This gives you a higher standing with Search Engines. - Place keywords relevant to your site’s content (the written words and sentences on your website, not contained in ALT tags and images.) Words a consumer would type in to find your products. Lastly, it’s promoting your site. Any advertising site is good. If you can do banner exchanges of banners and logo’s you’ve created, in exchange for banners of other companies, on your site, go for it!. It’s a fast and easy way to get free advertising for your shop. Any way to spread your site around is a great idea. Word of mouth, submit your website to search engine companies, and internet advertising on high traffic sites, such as Google, eBay, yahoo, MySpace, Facebook, and others are all great. There are many forums and such for all types of topics, you can create a profile, and use your website link in that profile, and comment on forums, to help spread your site’s name and URL around the internet. For advertising on our own site, we use Bidvertiser they are a pay per click advertiser. Commission junction, Google AdSense, and Click Bank are all great Paying Ad sites that will pay you money to put their ads on your website.
