Small Business Funding – 10 Ways To Actually Sell Your Idea Before You’re Ready To Launch

This is a conundrum that many entrepreneurs are faced with as they are developing their ideas and putting the business together. I hear “How do I test my product or service so that I can attract investors and the resources I need if I don’t HAVE the money or the resources to test my product?” You can actually do it all! Plan for milestones of beta-testing and validating every step of the way so you can continually attract the resources you need that will help build momentum. Momentum attracts investors and buyers.

Here are 10 things you can do during the planning process:

1. Start out by doing “dry testing” of your concept with live or online focus groups BEFORE you have an actual product to test. There are professional services for this but you can start by getting feedback from people you know who may volunteer for this. If you can validate the concept, move on to the next step.

2. Your product idea may need some major engineering before it’s ready for actual prototype creation and testing but you can prepare a non-working prototype sooner than later. Start doing “esthetics” testing with your groups to make sure people can appreciate it visually before you invest in a working prototype.

3. Get a panel of experts together who can mastermind with you to solve any issues you may have about product design, obsolescence, esthetics, marketability, etc. Document all participant credentials and any analysis made for possible inclusion into your business plan.

4. When a prototype is available, begin testing extensively with your customers (usually buyers) and end users (consumers) BEFORE you commit to full production. You could receive pre-orders at this stage.

5. Use your prototypes to acquire letters of intent and actual purchase orders from buyers or whoever would be purchasing large quantities of your product.

6. Create Joint Venture opportunities with individuals or organizations who have large mailing lists of potential clients for when you’re ready to launch.

7. As soon as possible, consider doing small manufacturing runs of your product for local or regional testing in a controlled market. When people start buying your product within that market, you have achieved “traction”.

8. Document in your business plan the various stages of testing and localized selling you have established to help build investor confidence.

9. During this timeframe, create activities which will build your database of prospective customers for a future launch. Offer pre-order discounts, host a contest, offer a newsletter or something else of value.

10. Want to sell into major retail stores? Consider meeting with local buyers in your desired markets to establish a time to do a “trunk show” or a short run in that store to test the product. It is much easier to achieve large national vendor contracts when you’ve had success in the local markets.

Many of these activities can be done prior to product development and all of these can be used to attract investors, contracts and other resources to help you achieve success with your business!

NIH SBIR-STTR Grants: Grant Funding for Small Businesses Engaged in Research and Development

SBIR and STTR grants from the National Institutes of Health provide federal funding to small businesses for health and medical research, and research and development.

If your small business is engaged in medical, biological, or behavioral research – or research and development – that has the potential for commercialization, you may be eligible for grant funding through the National Institutes of Health (NIH) federal SBIR/STTR grant program.

The SBIR/STTR grant program is the premier opportunity for small businesses to win government grant funding. The program’s aim is to increase and facilitate private sector commercialization of innovations. In other words, grants are awarded to small businesses to support research, and research and development, aimed at producing new, commercially-viable products. The SBIR/STTR program awards billions in grant funds to U.S small businesses every year, across 11 different federal departments.

Among those, the NIH has one of the most active programs. The NIH welcomes SBIR/STTR applications from U.S. businesses engaged in any medical, biomedical, biological, or behavioral research that aims to improve public heath. Each sub-agency within the NIH has specific areas of interest. Sub-agencies include the National Cancer Institute, National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute, National Institute on Drug Abuse, and many more. Sub-agencies and their current areas of interest are described in the 2011 SBIR/STTR funding opportunity announcement, available at the NIH Small Business Funding Opportunities website.

The Difference Between SBIR and STTR
The differences between the SBIR and STTR program are few. The main difference is that the SBIR program is for small business applicants alone. In the STTR program, a small business partners with an academic institute or nonprofit organization.

NIH SBIR/STTR Program Structure and Award Amounts
The NIH SBIR/STTR program is structured in 3 phases. Phase I is to establish feasibility, scientific/technical merit, and potential for commercialization. Phase II is a continuation of work begun in Phase I (only Phase I grantees may receive Phase II funding). Phase III is for commercialization.

Award amounts for successful NIH SBIR and STTR applicants are as follows:
SBIR Phase I: $150,000 over 6 months
SBIR Phase II: $1,000,000 over 2 years
STTR Phase I:  $100,000 over 12 months
STTR Phase II:  $750,000 over 2 years
Phase III: Funding depends on results in Phases I and II.

NIH SBIR/STTR Grant Application and Deadlines
The application for an NIH SBIR/STTR grant is extensive. In addition to supporting documents, applicants must include a detailed proposal narrative explaining the project rationale, method, and innovation, a complete budget, a commercialization plan, and sections detailing project resources, equipment, and personnel. Applicants who lack experience writing SBIR/STTR grants are encouraged to attend the institute’s workshops. All applicants are encouraged to begin application preparation at least 4 weeks ahead of the deadline. Applications are accepted electronically via grants.gov.

Applicants without the proper experience, expertise, or resources to prepare an application will find the help of a professional SBIR/STTR grant writer, or grant consultant, to be invaluable. SBIR grant writers who specialize in NIH grants can assist with proposal writing, developing a fundable budget, registrations, and submission.

The NIH has 3 deadline cycles per year. In 2011 they are: April 5, August 5, and December 5.

If your small business is involved, or planning to become involved, in biomedical or behavioral research with the potential for commercialization, the NIH SBIR/STTR program can provide critical funding to make these projects a reality, and help companies turn their innovative ideas into commercial products.

More information about SBIR/STTR grants is available online at http://www.sbir.gov.

Hispanic Scholarships For Women – Grants and Programs For Hispanic Women

Since 2001, the Hispanic population in the United States have gone past the African-American population, making them the new largest minority population in the country. On a 2006 census, there are about 100 million Hispanic-Americans in the country, or 15% of the entire population of the United States. Despite their number and their contribution to the local labor force; however, most Hispanics still end up with low paying, labor-intensive jobs. These jobs may not always be rewarding and their salary do not always cover their daily expenses; and as immigrants and non-American citizens, they may not always receive the right benefits compared to American citizens.

Hispanic women who have immigrated to the United States often find it difficult to build a comfortable environment for their families due to poverty and financial obstacles. Furthermore, those who were unable to undergo college education will less likely land a job that pays higher than most careers. This is what makes higher education a solution to their financial problems. Taking up courses under specialized fields could open them to opportunities that are less likely enjoyed by other Hispanic families or individuals belonging to the minority.

Due to the realities faced by Hispanic-Americans today, public and private offices are paying it forward by sponsoring various scholarships to assist Hispanics in the country. More institutions are offering Hispanic Scholarships for women as well as men. From undergraduate scholarships to graduate scholarships, achieving higher education now is possible, thanks to grants, scholarships, and similar forms of assistance.

Within the United States, there are certain associations that provide Hispanic women assistance and career opportunities. Below are five of the most reputable Latin/Hispanic organizations in the United States that provide Hispanic women with financial and moral support:

Stanford Society of Chicano– The Stanford Society of Chicano provides scholarships and grants to both Hispanic men and women. Although various courses are supported by their programs, the society encourages Hispanic women to specialize in fields where there are more men. The Hispanic Heritage Foundation– The foundation does not only provide Hispanic scholarships for women and men, but they also assist graduates into finding white-collar jobs. The Hispanic Women’s Corporation– As the name suggests, The Hispanic Women’s Corporation supports women’s rights and empower Hispanic women in the community. They also provide Hispanic scholarships for women only. They award fifty (50) scholars every year, wherein the awards range from $300 to $10, 000 every year. The Rising Farmworker Dream Fund– This MBA scholarship is usually offered to the children of Hispanic farm laborers or farmers. The total amount of the award ranges between $2, 500 to $5, 000. It also provides scholars access to various careers upon graduation. Hispanic Scholarship Fund– The Hispanic Scholarship Fund is awarded to all students in all levels. The award ranges between $1, 000 to $10, 000. Currently, it is one of the best options for Hispanic scholars and students.

Scholarships for women not only inspire and empower Hispanics and those belonging to the minority to pursue higher education, they also help in forming individuals who will be able to function well in the community. More importantly, these scholarship programs give hope to those who are cannot afford to send themselves to a good college or to advance further in their chosen careers.

Business Grants – 7 Lessons Learned As a Novice Grant Seeker Who Secured a $35,000 Business Grant

Business grants do really exist. This is a surprise to some people just like it was to me before 2003. At about that time, I began in earnest to search for grants for our nonprofit corporation to assist in our work with low-income families. I had the idea that business grants (as well as many grants in general) were more of a hoax than reality. Another misconception I had was that only large organizations could really qualify for grant funding. Thankfully, I pursued seeking grants and learned much valuable information along the way.

Eventually our organization secured a total of $35,000 from a gracious corporation who shared the same goals as our organization to help the needy in our target area. This was the first grant I ever wrote, and it was a joy to receive funding to increase the influence of our organization with the needy.

Here are seven of the most important things I learned in securing a business grant as a novice grant seeker:

Business grants require a clear purpose for using the money. You must be able to articulate your purpose on paper. Your business structure needs to be set up clearly with all your documents in order and accessible to present with your business grant proposal packet. Networking with other organizations is very helpful in securing funding. Matching money from your organization furthers your chances for additional funding for business grants. Other donations from your organization such as a portion of your facility, utilities, or even volunteer staff can count toward a favorable response for funding. Diligence is an absolute requirement. There are many times you will feel like quitting but must continue the process. Diligence is that quality that will help you start again when coming to an impasse. Knowledge is powerful. I saved this until last because it is probably the most important part of the process. It was difficult to know where to go to find out how to write a grant and even more difficult to know where to go to find the money. I began my search on the Internet manually putting together pieces of information until I found an organization that matched our goals.

Grants for you business can be found and funded. Are you willing to start the process and gain the knowledge? It is not for the weak at heart, but these seven steps listed above can assist you in writing your proposal for funding.

Finding a Federal Small Business Grant

Grants from the Federal government are given only to non-profit organizations and those that are set up as educational institutions. You may be able to find grants available at the state or local level. Obviously these will differ from one area to the next and you will need to look into what grants are available. If you have not already started your business, you may consider the nature of the business as certain industries are favored. These would include things like child care, green technology or tourism.

Even though you will not be able to find a Federal small business grant, you can often get a grant at the state level that will be dependent on you matching the amount of capital that they put up or somehow securing a loan to obtain the rest of the capital.

Many places will advertise that there are millions of dollars available in the form of many kinds of Federal small business grant. Whenever something sounds too good to be true, it likely is. This is the case here. Money rarely comes for free, and even when you get a grant at the state level there are usually many stipulations that you will need to adhere to.

Something that you should look into is getting backing from the Federal or state government for a low interest loan. They may provide this support or venture capital financing assistance so that you can get your small business up and running. It may not be as enticing as a Federal grant but it may still allow you to get your business started and that is really the most important thing.

You should check with the Small Business Administration to see what is available for you and it would not hurt to talk to other small business owners who have recently been in the same situation that you are now. It may help you to avoid people that are only looking to take your money.
