Free Grants For College

Finding information on free grants for college is a subject sure to be of interest to students just out of high school as well as later in life returning to school people. Grants for college are not necessarily hard to come by, but do require a bit or research and organizational work. Free grants for college are a must explore possibility for all college students.

Unlike ‘student loans’, grants do not have to be repaid, and unlike ‘scholarships’ they are not necessarily merit based.

The first thing you want to research is what types of grants are available for going to college. The most common grant for college that we hear about is called the “Pell Grant.” This grant is an income based federal grant for low-income families. However there are also grants that are not income based. There are free grants for college that are based on subject of study, merit, geographic location, minority status and more.

The first stop you should make when searching for free grants for college is your local community college’s Financial Aid office. Meet with a financial aid counselor and discuss some options that they know of which might be available to you. It’s their job to be aware of grants, student loan programs, and scholarships that could help you in your quest in furthering your education.

You should be forewarned however, that even though it is their job, they are often trained to do their job like systematic robots and they have a ‘first question’ rule. If you answer the first question the wrong way, their brains shut down and they will go no further with you.

An example of this would be that you may have a current student loan in default. If you are in default on a student loan, you cannot get another one until you make good on the first. However, there are exceptions to this rule, and if you know them you can take action to implement them and proceed with your career.

The problem with these financial aid counselors is that they are ‘entry level’ employees who are discouraged to think for themselves. They have a system and it’s all they know. If you tell them that you have arranged a workout and that you now will qualify for a new student loan, they will not even attempt to ‘look into it.’ They will simply repeat that until you satisfy the first loan, you will be unable to get another one. Occasionally, however, you will find someone who is a seasoned veteran of the financial aid world and who will go out of their way to help you, so this is still a must do.

The best way to avoid this is to do your own research on free grants for college via your local library and of course, the world wide web. Be prepared to make your applications early and wait. Free grants for college are available to you, you just need some ‘self startership’ to find them and get them.

The most popular form of business grants and loans made available through the Small Business Administration are called 7 (a) loans. These business loans are so named after the section in the Small Business Act that offers the provision of these loans. While the Small Business Administration does not have any monies to provide directly for business grants and loans they can direct businesses to a number of government agencies and departments that do provide this type of assistance. These include particular programs that offer business grants and loans to military veterans, persons with disabilities, minority groups, and special provisions for business activities related to disaster relief and faith based initiatives.

There are also special programs that offer business grants and loans to assist welfare recipients to get back into the workforce, improve the environment, and support the work of the military both at home and abroad. Surgical Grants

The mission of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) is to extend healthy life and reduce the burdens of illness and disability. The funding they have in the form of grants is to achieve their mission through research and research related activities such as career development, training, resource grants, and the like. The field of surgery is certainly within this realm, and, as such, is certainly not excluded from many of the available grants.

Though surgical grants have a somewhat smaller award rate than other fields of medicine, they can still be found and awarded if you know where to look and how to apply.

The NIH is a great resource for both finding surgical grants and understanding how to best improve your chances of award through properly applying for the grant. They provide a section on their website to walk people through each step and stage of the application and selection process.

Strongly encouraged by the NIH are projects that are

1) projects of high scientific caliber,
2) investigator-initiated research, and
3) unique research projects. The quality of unique is mandatory.

Legally, the NIH cannot support a project that has already been funded or research that has already been completed. They also cannot fund projects that gets funded from another, outside, organization.

Grants can be awarded to both individuals and institutions. Foreign institutions or organizations may, generally speaking, apply for grants though they may not be eligible for some grants. Eligibility for specific grants can be found in the Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA).

Imperative to the application process is a strict adherence to the due date of the grant. The NIH expects all applications to be submitted on time. When developing a submission plan, the institution administrators and the principal investigators should work together to decide:

*What funding opportunity announcement should be used
*Who will be responsible for completing the different forms in the application
*How will the application file be shared between different contributors
*When must the forms be completed in order to allow time for the actual submission.

College Grants For Students – Applying for College Grants The Easy Way

Anyone attending college for the first time whether you are 18 years old or 30 years old can be in for an exciting and possibly fearful time when it comes to paying for the education. Let’s face it, the cost of a four-year education is certainly not going down in price, in fact, tuition continues to increase, and more students are finding it necessary to take out astronomical amounts of students loans that eventually will have to be repaid. This keeps many would-be college students from attending college, but there are several federal need-based grants, that you can be awarded to help cover some or most of your expenses.

Your first place to start is with the Federal Student Aid, which is an application you can complete online, which determines your eligibility grants that are provided by the federal government. Grants that are need-based, such as the Pell Grant, are determined by the amount of money you made the previous year or if you are still dependent on your parents, the determination is based on what your parents earned.

Many people can become overwhelmed with filling out the Federal Student Aid application because it can seem intimidating, but if you run into any problems, the school you plan to attend can help you with filling out the information. You or your parents will need your previous year’s income taxes readily available. If you have not filed your taxes yet, you can still fill out the application as you will just fill in the boxes for your gross earnings and indicate that you have not filed but intend to do so.

After you have submitted your Federal Student Aid application online, you will probably hear back from them within a week. Whatever schools you list on your application as your possible choices to attend are sent electronically to each school. Once you have filled out an application to the college and have been accepted, then the financial aid department begins to put together a financial aid package for you, which includes federal grants that are need-based, which you will want to take advantage of because these do not need to be paid back.

In addition, there are grants that you can apply for outside your school that are for specific ethnic groups, women, and many other minority groups. Some of these grants are not a lot of money, but any amount of free money that you can get to pay for your education is great. Always look for all grant options that are available to you before you take out any student loans, because remember these have to be repaid, with interest. Taking out a lot of students loans is normally something people regret later in life because the student loans follow you wherever you go and graduating from college deep in debt from student loans is no way to begin your career.
